Property-Changing Haptic Handle for Encountered-Type Haptic Device
A universal end-effector for encountered-type haptic interfaces whose shape and stiffness can be systematically altered, overcoming the limited generality of fixed, pre-shaped end effectors.

Researchers: Noman Akbar, Hongchae Lee, and Seokhee Jeon
Previous approaches to encountered-type haptic interfaces suffer from limited generality: customized and pre-shaped end effectors can only represent a specific object, limiting the flexibility of the system, and replacing the end effector is not feasible when surface properties must be frequently changed. An ideal solution is to introduce a "universal end effector" whose haptic properties, such as shape and stiffness, can be systematically altered to effectively cope with virtual objects of different haptic properties.
